Dear Whites,

Well, I decided to brave the elements the first decent day in Feb. and take my chances beach hunting with my White’s Beach Hunter ID. I bundled up with my neoprene waders, gloves, hat, scoop, and headed out to the New Jersey Shore.

The tide was out --0.5 so I had a great opportunity to get into the water as I have seen others do it but I am not a cold weather person. As I set out the water was COLD but tolerable with the gear on. I knew I had to be patient and slow sweep. The Beach Hunter ID picked up the usual sinkers and occasional clad coin.

The Beach Hunter ID performed great even in the extreme cold salt water because after a little while of detecting I got a yellow signal thinking another sinker but it turned up a 14K gold ring with a greenish blue stone and 2 diamonds. I warmed up quick so with the tide on its way in I started to work my way to the shore. Slowly sweeping working my way in I got a green signal and I turned up another ring. It seems to be a silver skull ring.

After a few hours’ waist and knee deep in cold ocean water I headed up to the pebble line and worked that for a little while when I dug up a 1946 silver quarter. I was told by other detectorists that some old silver coins were found on this stretch of NJ beach. The beach itself had a lot of erosion so out of the water I worked the eroded slopes of the wet sand beach and turned up an old black Onyx ring stamped 1937 and heavily tarnished.

Tired and excited I headed home, called my wife telling her what I found. She was happy for me that my time in the water with my Beach Hunter ID was NOT a waste. She claimed the gold ring. Who am I to argue, she allowed me the time out. Winter beach hunting with some patience is well worth it.
