It’s been a long winter this year for me; this will be my second year with my White’s DFX. Although I have found some real nice things like gold wedding bands and a few Indian head pennies and even some silver dimes. I hope this year to find some very old relics from the War of 1812.

I guess I’m lucky because I live close to a place that at one time was the very frontier of the old west, the heart land of America I live in Terre Haute Indiana. It just so happens that in 1811 William Henry Harrison on his way to the battle of Tippecaneo stopped here and found that on this bend of the Wabash River would be a good spot for a supply storehouse. He had his men build the fort on the high ground on the east side of the river just before a bend. The fort was completed on October 23, 1811 the troops held a small ceremony and named the outpost Fort Harrison.

The story goes that on the night of September 4, 1812 600 Miami, Potawatomi, Kickapoo and Winnebago warriors attacked the fort. It is believed that one Indian crawled up and set fire to the south west side of the fort. The men returned fire on the Indians and held off the attack. The Indians withdrew late that day, but remained in the area keeping it under siege to starve the occupants. On September 15 reinforcements arrived from Vincennes and the Indians departed.

I have pictures of the area where I plan on hunting one is where the fort stood in 1911. One hundred years after the battle, and two of the fort in post cards were rebuilt in a local park many years ago. It is in the near future that I hope to find the past along the Wabash River in Terre Haute Indiana.

Thank you,
