One Thanksgiving, my wife and I were having dinner at her mother’s house in Forest Grove, Oregon, in a neighborhood of many older homes. Her Uncle Ray came down from Spokane to have Thanksgiving dinner with us, too.

I happened to have my XLT with me that day. Uncle Ray pointed to it and said, “Let’s see how that thing works.”

So, I turned it on and we went out into the backyard. As soon as I put my metal detector down, I got a signal right away! I dug down about 4 inches and found a 1901 ‘S’ half dollar! And no matter how much I denied it, until the day he died, Uncle Ray swore I planted that coin there.

I found out later that Uncle Ray had a cousin, August, who lived in Sweet Home. Years ago, he and Mr. White senior, used to have coffee together in the mornings. Small world, isn’t it?

I’ve found plenty of coins before and after that Thanksgiving, but that surprisingly fast find was definitely one of my more enjoyable ones!
