We still enjoy floating down the river, watch the sun rise over the water, listen to the first bird song at dawn, but now we have two metal detectors in the canoe with us.
LocationRural New Hampshire
Mark and I used to be avid bass fishermen, and up until 3 summers ago spent every spare minute out on the water. While out floating in the canoe on our beautiful New England lakes, we used to admire the stone walls that crisscross the woods on shore and wonder about their history. One day we decided to explore the past and try metal detecting. We watched numerous youtube videos, and, following the advice from Mark’s uncle, got started in the hobby with two White’s machines.
On our second outing we dug a beautiful colonial large cent – and there was no turning back. I will never forget the feeling of seeing a 200+ year old coin pop out of the soil; to be the first person to hold it in my hand after such a long time! This coin, at that moment, was a tangible thread connecting me to the people who lived here before, when the country was still in its infancy.
From then on, we devoted every spare moment to metal detecting. Fields and woods, private yards, shorelines – there are treasures everywhere! An old ox shoe showed us that what is now a pine forest used to be farmland plowed with a team of oxen, a colonial shoe buckle near a stone wall means someone walked the very steps we are walking now, a beautiful crotal bell found a foot deep rings again after more than a century. We have since then accumulated a wonderful collection of relics and coins, each telling a story about our past. Our favorite finds include large Spanish silver coins (1, 2, 4 and 8 Reales), over a 100 bells, and beautiful George Washington Inaugural buttons.
I personally do not miss our weekend long fishing trips. We still enjoy floating down the river, watch the sun rise over the water, listen to the first bird song at dawn, but now we have two metal detectors in the canoe with us. You just never know what and where the next treasure will be…
